Another "Unqualified Crony" Appointment Bypasses Congress

Before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee could vote on President Bush's nomination of Ambassador Ellen Sauerbrey to be the Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration, President Bush recess appointed her on January 4, 2006. The action has drawn widespread criticism from groups concerned with international population and reproductive health, which strenuously opposed the nomination. Unlike her well-qualified predecessors, she has no experience with refugee protection or responding to complex humanitarian emergencies, or in managing a $700+ budget. The Senate has been denied the opportunity to render their judgment.
