In 2005, in response to aggressive pressure from ultra-conservative political and religious groups in the U.S. and Peru, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced it would not allow the use of U.S. funds to inform women in Peru about availability and use of emergency contraception (EC).
It is a stunning decision because EC is legal in both the United States and Peru and is recognized as a contraceptive method and not an abortifacient by the World Health Organization.
This is a clear abrogation of the rights of women to access all available contraceptive methods and a reflection of the willingness of the Bush Administration to subjugate women's lives to ideology and politics.
We ask for your help in writing USAID's Assistant Administrator for Global Health, Kent Hill, to demand that USAID reverse this decision. Click for sample text and send an email to Mr. Hill
